Abstract

Since the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, Islamophobia in the United States has risen sharply, manifesting both in institutional policies and individual discriminatory attitudes. The 9/11 events created a widespread stigma that associates the Muslim community with extremism and terrorism. This study aims to analyze the factors contributing to the rise of Islamophobia in the United States during the Joe Biden administration (2019–2024), with a focus on New York City—a major epicenter for such issues. As a multicultural city with a highly diverse population, New York often serves as a focal point for debates surrounding religious diversity, including the phenomenon of Islamophobia. The study employs a descriptive qualitative methodology, utilizing secondary data from academic journals and publications concerning Islamophobia. The findings indicate that the rise of Islamophobia in the United States is driven by several key factors: first, media representations that frequently link Muslims to terrorism, thereby reinforcing negative stereotypes. Second, the conflict between Israel and Palestine has exacerbated domestic tensions, often leading to an increase in hate crimes against Muslims. Third, the growing visibility of a more diverse and vocal Muslim community—particularly among the younger generation—has frequently triggered a backlash from certain groups influenced by hate speech, both in the physical world and online.
