Abstract

The ideas, thoughts, and actions of KH. Hasyim Asy’ari played a significant role in shaping the paradigm of Nahdlatul Ulama (NU). As its founder (muassis), his thinking has served as an inspiration and a model for developing the mindset of NU, including in the realm of religious moderation. Consequently, exploring his conceptions of the "self" and the "other" is essential to uncovering the roots of his moderate perspective. This paper examines KH Hasyim Asy’ari’s views on religious moderation through the lens of "self and others" theory, drawing upon both his published works and unpublished manuscripts. The study reveals that KH Hasyim Asy’ari’s approach to religious moderation can be categorized into two domains: the realm of faith and the realm of interpersonal relations. In the realm of faith, KH Hasyim maintained an uncompromising stance; tawhid (the oneness of God). However, this commitment to tawhid he championed principles of respect, compassion, unity, and mutual assistance.

Viewed through the lens of "self and others" theory, KH Hasyim’s ideas on religious moderation—specifically concerning faith—align more closely with the perspective of Levinas, in which the "self" holds a position of greater significance than the "other." Conversely, in the context of relations with other beings, his approach recognizes the fundamental equality of all creatures before God. In the terminology of Ricoeur, the "self" and the "other" occupy a symmetrical position—one characterized not merely by coexistence, but by a necessity for "pro-existence" (a shared, active engagement in existence).
