The global environmental crisis demands a collective response from various elements of society, including traditional Islamic educational institutions like pesantren. This study aims to analyze the cultural construction of environmental preservation at Pesantren Bahrul Ulum Al-Hamid Ganjaran, Gondanglegi, Malang. Utilizing Peter L. Berger and Thomas Luckmann's social construction theory (externalization, objectivation, and internalization) alongside the Fiqh al-Bi'ah (environmental jurisprudence) approach, this qualitative research with a case study design explores how theo-ecological values are produced, institutionalized, and internalized by the santri community. Data were collected through participatory observation, in-depth interviews with the leadership (Kiai), teachers (ustadz), and students (santri), as well as documentation of the pesantren's curriculum and regulations. The results indicate that the cultural construction of environmental preservation occurs through three simultaneous stages: externalization through the Kiai's articulation of environmental preservation ideas derived from classical Islamic texts; objectivation through the institutionalization of the roan tradition, cleanliness regulations, and an ecology-based curriculum; and internalization reflected in the formation of eco-piety among santri. This study concludes that the successful transformation of a pesantren into an eco-pesantren is highly determined by the charismatic leadership of the Kiai, who bridges classical theological doctrines with contemporary ecological practices.
