AI Policy

The English Language Teaching Journal (ELTJ) recognizes the responsible use of artificial intelligence (AI) tools in academic publishing. This policy applies to authors, editors, and reviewers to maintain academic integrity, transparency, and research quality.

1. Authors

Authors may use AI tools to assist with language editing, grammar checking, and improving readability. However, AI tools must not replace the authors’ intellectual contribution, critical analysis, or responsibility for the research. Authors are fully responsible for the accuracy, originality, and integrity of their manuscripts.

The use of generative AI tools to produce substantive manuscript content, analyze data, or generate images must be transparently disclosed in the manuscript, including the tool used and its purpose. AI tools must not be listed as authors.

Authors must not use AI tools to fabricate or falsify data, references, research findings, or other scholarly content. All references and factual claims must be verified by the authors.

2. Editors

Editors may use AI tools for limited administrative or language-related assistance. Editorial decisions must remain based on the manuscript’s academic quality, originality, relevance, and compliance with the journal’s editorial policies. Editors must protect confidential manuscript information and must not upload unpublished manuscripts or confidential editorial materials to AI tools without appropriate safeguards and authorization.

3. Reviewers

Reviewers must conduct independent and critical evaluations of manuscripts. They must not upload unpublished manuscripts, confidential manuscript content, or review materials to AI tools that could compromise confidentiality. Reviewers remain fully responsible for their assessments and recommendations.

4. Accountability and Compliance

The use of AI does not transfer responsibility for scholarly work from the authors, editors, or reviewers to the AI tool. ELTJ reserves the right to request clarification regarding AI use and to take appropriate action in accordance with its publication ethics policies if misconduct is identified.

This policy may be updated as AI technologies and scholarly publishing standards evolve.
